Reading Time Estimator

Reading time is estimated by dividing word count by average reading speed. Adult average is 200-250 words per minute for comprehension reading. We use 200 WPM for accurate reading and 300-400 WPM for skimming. Technical content may be slower; familiar content faster.

Reading time estimates help users decide whether to read now or save for later. It improves user experience and engagement - people are more likely to start an article when they know the time commitment. Many popular sites (Medium, blogs) display this prominently.

Our estimator adds approximately 12 seconds per image and uses slower reading rates for code blocks. Complex diagrams or infographics may need additional time. The estimate is for continuous reading - user engagement may vary with interactive content.

For audio content, speaking rate is typically 150-160 words per minute for audiobooks and 120-150 WPM for podcasts with discussion. Divide word count by appropriate rate. Our calculator provides text reading time; multiply by approximately 1.3-1.5 for audio estimates.
